2011 Biomedical Materials Market Analysis

Biomedical materials are remarkable for their remarkable social benefits. With the increase of social demand, the market potential in this area is even more impressive. According to statistics, the global biomedical materials market has maintained a growth rate of 15% to 20% in the past 10 years, of which the production and sales volume in 1997 reached 70 billion US dollars, of which the United States accounted for 36.5 billion US dollars, equivalent to the scale of its semiconductor industry. Many countries are increasingly optimistic about this high-growth, promising industry, and have increased investment in scientific research and development and industrialization.

According to insiders, only the national “recognition plan” during the “Ninth Five-Year Plan” period requires 350,000 sets of intraocular lenses every year. At present, there are more than 100 million catheters imported into the body in the country each year, and the demand for artificial joints is also 100. More than 10,000 sets. However, China's biomedical material industry is still in its infancy, with its output value accounting for less than 2% of the world's total, and its technical level is also low. 90% of its high-tech products rely on imports. Compared with 1997 and 1995, the number of imported registered goods increased by 20 times to more than 1,350 kinds; registered foreign manufacturers soared 25 times to more than 580. The large amount of imported products not only aggravates the burden of medical expenses for the country and individuals, but also seriously threatens the survival of the industry in China.

The National Ministry of Science and Technology recently released the "Outline for Biomedical Engineering Industrialization" as one of the "Ninth Five-Year Plan" pharmaceuticals. Biomedical materials are also a very important part of them. The Quanxing Group, Sichuan Business Group, Sichuan Pharmaceuticals, Sichuan University, and West China Medical University have joined hands in preparation for the establishment of the “Sichuan Biomedical Materials Science and Technology Industrial Base Development Co., Ltd.” to aim at integrating the advantages of Quanxing, Sichuan Business, and Sichuan Pharmaceuticals brand and capital. The scientific research technology and clinical results of Sichuan University and West China Medical University are "grafted" to form the first industrialized base for biomedical materials in China. This plan has received great attention and strong support from the provincial party committee, the provincial government, and the National Science and Technology Department.

At the same time, Professor Zhang Xingdong, who is also the director of the Center for Biomaterials Engineering Research of Sichuan University, introduced that the planning of the base park has been initially completed and mainly includes four parts:

First, a group of small and medium-sized enterprises formed an industry group and divided more than 10 projects and products.

The second is to establish the provincial biomedical material engineering technology research center as a technology incubator;

The third is to establish and improve the national laboratory for the detection and evaluation of biological materials and medical devices; the fourth is to establish a clinical application research institute.
