Moving always feels like a whirlwind, doesn’t it? I usually get so caught up in the logistics of settling into a new home that it takes me a while to fully embrace the charm of the place. This time around, I decided to break the pattern. Once the essentials were taken care of, I took a step back to enjoy the moment and explore what our new neighborhood had to offer. So far, I've discovered three must-try things in Louisiana that I think deserve a spotlight. I’m sure there will be many more discoveries to come!
Let’s dive into my top three favorites so far:
Number One // Zapp’s Cajun Dill Gator-Taters
I’ll admit, pregnancy cravings played a big role in my discovery of these potato chips, but honestly, they’re incredible regardless of the baby bump! The moment I saw the quirky name “Gator-tater,†I knew I had to give them a try. They’re crispy, flavorful, and just the right mix of tangy and salty. I’ve already added a few other flavors to my grocery list because, why not indulge, right? Pregnancy or not, these chips are a winner!
Number Two // Honey Island Swamp Tour
Living on the North Shore of Lake Ponchartrain, we’re just a short drive away from some of the most beautiful swamps in Louisiana. When friends visited recently, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to show them something unique. We booked a swamp tour, and I have to say, it exceeded all expectations. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, pointing out all sorts of wildlife we wouldn’t have noticed on our own. Alligators sunning themselves, egrets perched on branches, and snakes slithering through the underbrush—it was like stepping into another world. One of the highlights was spotting a family of otters playing near the water’s edge. It was such a memorable experience!
Number Three // Beignets
Beignets are a breakfast staple in New Orleans, and while I haven’t yet visited the iconic Café du Monde, I’ve had the pleasure of sampling them at several local spots. These fluffy, deep-fried pastries covered in powdered sugar are absolute heaven. My personal favorite so far has been Morning Call, and my little guy, Max, is completely obsessed. Watching him learn how to dust his beignet with sugar was hilarious—he kept asking for “just a little more, Mommy!†every single bite. If you ever visit New Orleans, don’t miss out on these sweet treats!
What about you? Have you discovered any hidden gems or favorite spots lately? I’d love to hear your recommendations!
