In 2005, Yutai County in Shandong Province took full advantage of two key opportunities: the arable land fertility survey and the soil testing and formula fertilization project. By thoroughly assessing the nutrient levels and quality of the county's farmland, experts at the Fertilizer Terminal developed a specialized fertilizer formula tailored for garlic—14-18-10—based on its specific nutritional needs. Through extensive field trials, demonstrations, and widespread promotion, this approach led to significant economic benefits.
During that year, eight demonstration sites were established across three towns—Wangmiao, Yucheng, and Lige—as well as Luotun township. Farmers applied between 100 to 130 kg of the custom formula per mu, with an average application of 121.9 kg (containing 17.1 kg of nitrogen, 21.9 kg of phosphorus pentoxide, and 12.2 kg of potassium). For comparison, the conventional compound fertilizer was applied at an average of 129.4 kg per mu (with equal parts N, P₂O₅, and K₂O at 20.7 kg each). Yield measurements at five points during the harvest showed that the formula fertilizer area produced an average of 1,485.2 kg per mu, while the conventional fertilization area yielded 1,372.9 kg. This meant an increase of 112.3 kg per mu and an additional income of 269.5 yuan. On top of that, farmers saved about 141.4 yuan per mu, with the cost of compound fertilizer at 2.6 yuan per kg and formula fertilizer at 1.6 yuan per kg. The overall economic gain reached 410.9 yuan per mu, clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of the new approach.
Farmers also noticed improved growth performance with the formula fertilizer. Garlic plants returned to green faster—within 4–6 days—showing darker, larger leaves, thicker stems, and a delayed aging process. Compared to traditional fertilizers, the application of standard fertilizer could be delayed by 3–5 days without affecting yield or quality.
By 2005, Yutai County had successfully promoted 627 tons of garlic-specific formula fertilizer across all natural villages in the project area. No farmer reported worse results compared to conventional fertilization. Many expressed satisfaction, saying “formula fertilizer is good†and “soil testing and fertilization have given us real scientific farming methods.†As a result, farmers now order more than 1,300 tons of the formula fertilizer annually.
