The other night, my daughter Aliyah and I had the privilege of attending the opening performance of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella during its cross-country tour. As we sat side by side in the theater, her little hand nestled in mine, I couldn't help but feel the magic of childhood all over again. It was a reminder that the world is full of endless possibilities, not just for my daughter, but for every single one of us.
This isn't just another Cinderella story. It's about every girl who dares to dream bigger, to strive for more, and to change the world around them. The updated script by Douglas Carter Beane beautifully captures Ella’s journey not as someone passively waiting for her prince, but as someone actively seeking transformation and change. She rises above challenges, driven by the promise of possibility.
As I watched the show, I found myself reflecting on my own life. What is it that I've been holding back from? What dreams or passions have I allowed to remain dormant? The message from Marie, the quirky and inspiring fairy godmother, resonated deeply with me: "Don’t wait for everything to be perfect—just go." This struck a chord, especially as I navigate the daily grind of life. Ordinary tasks like grocery shopping or doing laundry don’t have to define us; they can coexist with extraordinary living. As Salle Redfield once said, “Don’t be willing to accept an ordinary life.â€
Paige Faura, who plays Ella, captivated the audience not only with her dazzling performance but also with her personal story. Balancing motherhood while touring is no small feat, and she admitted, "It takes a lot of work, and a lot of coffee." That got me thinking about the sisterhood of motherhood and how, despite our differences, we often find common ground in the challenges we face.
After the show, we learned about a wonderful initiative tied to the production. In collaboration with the Straz Center and the Belle of the Ball Project, the show accepts donations of formal gowns, shoes, and accessories during performances. These items go to a nonprofit that provides dresses to young women in need, ensuring that no girl misses out on the joy of dancing because of financial constraints.
Reflecting on the evening, I was reminded of something powerful: each of us carries within us the potential to make a difference. Whether it’s through pursuing a passion, supporting others, or simply daring to believe in ourselves, we all have the ability to shine.
