According to a French study, a slow walk may not only mean that the time to arrive at the destination is late, but your health may also be compromised.
According to Reuters, researchers at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) found that people who were slow to walk had a three-fold higher risk of dying from heart disease and related diseases than those in the same age group.
Researcher and Inserm research director Alexis Elbaz told Reuters, “This conveys a major message to the general population that maintaining health after age can have a major impact, helping to prolong life and improve muscle function. ”
He said the study also showed that walking speed tests may be used to test the health of older patients.
Previous studies have shown that slow walking is associated with an increased risk of death over a given period of time and is associated with falls and other poor health problems, but does not demonstrate that heart disease or other conditions are associated with an increased risk of death.
The study began in 1999 and lasted for five years, covering more than 3,200 relatively healthy people in three French cities, regardless of gender, between the ages of 65 and 85.
Five years later, the study found that one-third of the slow-moving respondents had a 44% higher mortality rate than the remaining two-thirds of the pace, and died of a heart attack and stroke. The risk of related diseases is also higher. Meditech Medical Network
