To treat children with congenital microtia, a recent British doctor used a state-of-the-art 3D scanning technique to implant a new artificial external ear.
There is no need for a child to undergo a general anesthesia and an MRI scan to create a 3D model of the artificial external ear. Ken Stewart, a professional physician at the Royal Children's Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland, uses the Artec Spider 3D scanner to capture the other half of the patient's healthy outer ear and build new data based on these data. Artificial external ear model, Stewart told foreign media Digital Trends: "Many patients have a missing ear condition. Our traditional method is to use the acetate to track the patient's normal outer ear 2D to form a model to help make the corresponding size and shape. The other outer ear, and the 3D scanner and mirroring software now used will allow us to build a new outer ear model more accurately."
As Stewart said, before the introduction of 3D scanning technology, surgeons modeled the new ear by extracting the costal cartilage, but such a method could not accurately capture the exact size of the ear. Once the 3D model was built, Stewart would use a 3D printer to print. Need to make a replica of the outer ear, the surgeon will transplant these artificial external ear to the patient in the operating room after disinfection. At present, the 3D printer can only copy and print the plastic outer ear. Stewart believes that with the maturity of bio-printing technology, the printed biological external ear will be very easy.
