A cup of milk a day improves brain function

Drinking at least one glass of milk daily can not only ensure the key nutrients needed by the body, but also improve brain function. This is a new discovery made by researchers at the University of Maine.

Researchers recently published in the International Dairy Journal report that adults with higher intakes of milk or dairy products score higher in memory and other tests of brain function, and they have “failed” ratios in tests. Only one-fifth of those who do not drink or drink less milk.

Researchers conducted eight brain function tests on more than 900 adults aged 23 to 98 and recorded their milk consumption habits. They found that people who drank at least one glass of milk a day had higher scores on the test regardless of their age; the highest scores were also among those who consumed the most milk.

Excluding factors such as lifestyle and dietary habits that may affect brain health, there is still a link between drinking more milk and a healthier brain. The researchers said that some of the nutrients in milk may directly affect brain function, but still need to further confirm the benefits of drinking more milk.

The 2010 edition of the American Dietetic Guidelines issued by the U.S. Department of Health recommends that adults drink 3 cups of low-fat or skim milk daily.
