This smart food tracking necklace can hear your chewing sound and determine what you are eating to record your calorie intake.
Oh! You took a bite of carrots. Hey! You are drinking soup. Hey! You are eating cookies. The food you eat will be different and the sound will be different. Wenyao Xu, a computer scientist at the University of Buffalo in the United States, decided to test whether technology can track calorie intake based on the sounds of people eating.
Xu developed a necklace called AutoDietary. This necklace has a small microphone that can hear the sound of your chewing. The companion mobile app will pair the sounds heard with the sound of the audio library. Xu said in a statement issued by the University of Buffalo on Wednesday: "Every food has its own unique voice when chewed."
Xu did a small experiment with 12 participants. He allowed participants to drink water and eat apples, carrots, biscuits, peanuts, walnuts and chips. The correct rate of the necklace is 85%.
The study, titled "AutoDietary: A Wearable Hearing Sensor System for Identifying Daily Food Intake," was published in the IEEE Sensors Journal in February.
Tracking food intake is a challenge. Xu hopes that necklaces like AutoDietary will one day help people track and manage their diet for people with food problems, obesity or diabetes.
AutoDietary is still in the early stages of development. Although it can correctly hear some foods, some foods will make the same sound when chewed, and it is difficult for them to distinguish them. For example, a necklace cannot distinguish between regular pancakes and syrup pancakes.
Xu's solution to this would be a biomonitor that tracks blood sugar levels and other data that helps determine the nutritional value and composition of food. With the super hearing of it and the necklace, you can better control your eating habits.
