Hong Kong University of Science and Technology develops "smart pillow" to cure sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is not a good night's sleep. However, in recent years, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has developed a "smart pillow" that combines diagnosis and treatment of diseases. It is expected to launch the Hong Kong market in the second half of this year.

According to reports, the product can automatically adjust the height of the pillow airbag according to the patient's sleep condition, so that the buyer's respiratory tract can be restored, reducing the risk of hypoxia and even suffocation. After testing the products in 300 moderately ill patients in Shenzhen, the average sleep suffocation time dropped from 25 minutes to seven minutes per night, and the number of suffocation dropped by 60%.

It is easy to feel tired during the day and thunderous at night. It is likely to be a sign of sleep apnea. Although Hong Kong people are not unfamiliar with the disease in recent years, they rarely seek medical advice and become an invisible urban killer. In 2013, Zhang Da, a professor of engineering at the University of Science and Technology, started working with the Shenzhen People's Hospital to develop a “smart pillow” system. When the patient sleeps, he wears a pulse oximeter that looks like a watch, and with the use of "smart pillows", he can adjust the height of the pillow and improve the sleeping position of the patient in response to the breathing quality during sleep.
