US develops a new water-based gel microvasculature system. Cornell University engineers published an article saying that they use water-based gels to mimic the vascular system to create a cell-scale (10-100 micron) vasculature in a gel. The interior creates tiny channels that provide oxygen, essential nutrients and auxin to individual cells.
This latest research is published in the latest issue of Nature Materials. In this gel scaffold, tens of millions of living cells can be supported per milliliter, and only a template is created for the growth of the tissue, and the cells can be arranged in any form in a three-dimensional space, such as the shape of a knee meniscus. In theory, this system can support multiple organizations. In the near future, scientists will be able to cultivate a variety of synthetic bioengineered tissues, such as muscles and cartilage, for human transplantation in the laboratory.
Because the micro-pipes inside the gel vasculature allow oxygen, sugar, and protein to circulate freely, researchers can also optimize the biochemical environment for cell growth by controlling the ration of the culture medium during tissue culture. Researchers are working to produce the type of tissue needed through stem cells. Currently, cartilage derived from stem cells has been manufactured but has not yet been applied.
As a new tool, researchers hope to apply these engineering organizations to non-clinical areas, such as replacing experimental animals for pharmaceutical and chemical testing.
