Celery High Yield Cultivation

Celery thrives in a cool and moderate climate, and it is highly sensitive to high temperatures. The ideal growing temperature ranges between 15°C and 25°C. When temperatures exceed 26°C, the plant's growth is hindered, leading to a decline in quality and an increased risk of diseases. For seed processing, celery should be sown around the end of June. Seeds need to be pre-treated 7 to 10 days before planting. They should be soaked in cold water for 24 hours, rinsed thoroughly, and then dried on a mat. Once the surface moisture is gone, the seeds are wrapped in gauze and placed in a pot at 15–20°C to encourage germination. After about 6 to 7 days, most of the seeds will have sprouted and are ready for sowing. When preparing the nursery, choose a well-drained sandy loam soil with good topsoil capacity. A week before sowing, apply 2,000 kg of organic fertilizer per acre and create a flat seedbed that is 1.2 meters wide. During the preparation, some of the soil is removed and sifted to be used for covering the seeds later. When sowing the seeds, ensure the bed is well-watered. Mix the seeds with a small amount of fine soil and spread them evenly. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, approximately 0.5 to 1 cm thick. Use 1 to 1.25 kg of seeds per acre, which can provide seedlings for about 5 mu. After sowing, cover the bed with straw or similar material to provide shade and protect from rain. The covering should not touch the soil directly. If using straw, gradually uncover the plants daily after they emerge, especially during midday heat. After more than 10 days, the cover can be removed completely. If using wheat straw, remove a portion after 2 to 3 days, and do this in 3 to 4 batches. After sowing, apply a herbicide solution—25% paraquat diluted 300 times, at a rate of 70 to 100 kg per acre. Once the true leaves appear, the seedlings will be about 1.5 to 2 cm tall. When there are 2 true leaves, the second thinning should be done, and the seedlings will be 2 to 3 cm tall. Water the seedlings with small amounts of water, and apply 8 to 10 kg of urea per acre when they have 4 to 5 leaves. Later, reduce watering to promote strong, healthy seedlings. Transplanting usually takes place in early August. Before planting, apply 5,000 kg of organic fertilizer per acre, and prepare the field by deep plowing, leveling, and fine tilling. Plant the seedlings according to their size, ensuring the roots are buried properly. Maintain a spacing of 20 cm between plants. Water the seedlings immediately after transplanting. After the seedlings settle, cultivate the soil deeply several times to ensure proper aeration and root development. Avoid watering unless there is a clear sign of drought. When the leaves grow upright, it indicates the plant has entered its rapid growth phase. Apply 20 to 30 kg of compound fertilizer (Sanyuan Hefei) per acre and water every 5 to 6 days. Common diseases affecting celery include blight, leaf spot, bacterial leaf spot, black rot, and soft rot. The main pests are aphids. To manage diseases, spray 75% chlorothalonil or 55% carbendazim WP diluted 600 times, once every 7 days for 2 to 3 applications. For aphid control, use 10% imidacloprid at 30 g per acre or 2.5% thiamethoxam at 30 ml mixed with 40–50 kg of water and spray accordingly. Harvesting typically occurs 90 to 120 days after planting, with yields of over 5,000 kg per mu. Harvest the plants carefully and sort them for sale.
