Cultivation Techniques for Early Seed Cabbage Variety in Songjiang Region

The variety originates from a hybrid of Chinese cabbage developed by the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences. This particular type is widely cultivated in Hangzhou, and due to its popularity, it's also commonly referred to as "Hangzhou Cabbage" in the Shanghai region. It's mainly grown for small cabbages with a growing cycle of approximately 30 days. The plant features broad, ovate leaves that are thick, pale green, and have wavy edges. The leaves are soft on the front side and slightly rough on the back, while the petioles are white. It has a high net rate, meaning a large portion of the plant is usable. The flavor is excellent, making it very popular among consumers. Additionally, this variety exhibits strong resistance to diseases such as downy mildew and bacterial soft rot, as well as good tolerance to high temperatures and humidity, allowing it to thrive even during the hot and rainy season. In terms of cultivation techniques, sowing can be done flexibly between early May and late September, with August being an ideal time for optimal growth. Since the root system develops mainly in the topsoil layer, it’s important to choose well-drained, fertile soil with a pH around 6.5. The field should be planted in a plot previously used for non-cruciferous crops, preferably sandy loam soil. Each mu (a traditional Chinese unit of area) requires about 500 grams of seeds, and the planting width should be around 1.5 meters. A sufficient amount of base fertilizer should be applied, mixing the seeds evenly with fine soil before sowing. The soil should be leveled, and watered thoroughly the day before sowing, followed by sowing the next day. After sowing, the field should be gently pressed or rolled to ensure good contact between the seeds and the soil, which helps reduce moisture evaporation and promotes quick and uniform germination. Watering should be adjusted based on weather conditions to maintain proper soil moisture. Top-dressing should be applied to support healthy seedling growth. During the high-temperature season, it's advisable to cover the field with shade nets to lower temperatures and protect against direct sunlight and heavy rain. Common pests and diseases include downy mildew, soft rot, diamondback moth, and aphids, all of which require timely control measures. Harvesting is typically done in batches according to market demand, ensuring freshness and quality. This variety is not only easy to grow but also highly profitable due to its resilience and market appeal.
