Cultivation Techniques for Early Seed Cabbage Variety in Songjiang Region

The variety originates from a hybrid Chinese cabbage developed by the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences. This particular type is widely cultivated in Hangzhou, which is why it's also known as "Hangzhou cabbage" in the Shanghai region. It is mainly grown for small cabbages and has a short growing cycle of approximately 30 days. The plant features broad, ovate leaves that are thick and pale green with wavy edges. The leaves are soft on the front side and have a slightly rough back. The petioles are white, and the plant has a high net rate. It is known for its excellent flavor and texture, making it very popular among consumers. Additionally, this variety exhibits strong resistance to diseases such as downy mildew and soft rot, as well as good tolerance to high temperatures and humidity. It can even thrive during the hot and rainy season. For cultivation, sowing can be done flexibly from early May to late September, though August is often considered ideal for optimal growth. Since the root system develops mainly in the upper soil layer, it’s important to choose a fertile field with a pH around 6.5. The land should have good irrigation and drainage systems, and it's best to avoid areas previously used for cruciferous crops. Each mu (a traditional Chinese unit of area) requires about 500 grams of seeds, and the planting width should be around 1.5 meters. A sufficient amount of base fertilizer should be applied, and seeds can be mixed evenly with fine soil before sowing. After leveling the soil, water the field the day before sowing and spread the seeds the next day. After sowing, the field should be lightly pressed with a roller or similar tool to ensure good seed-to-soil contact, reducing moisture evaporation and promoting faster and more uniform germination. Depending on weather conditions, maintain proper soil moisture by watering as needed. Applying top-dressing alongside regular watering helps ensure healthy seedling development. During the high-temperature season, it's recommended to cover the field with shade nets to lower temperatures and protect the plants from direct sunlight and heavy rain. Common pests and diseases include downy mildew, soft rot, diamondback moths, and aphids, all of which require timely control. Harvesting is usually done in batches based on market demand, ensuring a continuous supply of fresh produce throughout the growing season.
