In a recent development, the special animal breeding industry in Jiaonan City, Shandong Province, has seen some exciting progress. Liu Renliang, a local farmer from Lijiazhuang Village in the Jiaohe Economic Zone, has taken an innovative approach by setting up a rabbit breeding operation within his orchard. His project now houses over 200 species of wild rabbits, marking a unique and promising venture in the region.
Hares are known for their resilience, adaptability, and ability to thrive in various environments. They grow quickly, require minimal feed, and offer high yields, making them an attractive option for farmers. Typically, hares can be ready for market within just three months, which is significantly faster than traditional livestock.
The meat of the hare is tender, flavorful, and considered a delicacy. It has been recognized by the World Rabbit Science Association as "beauty meat" and "healthy meat." Despite its popularity, domestic rabbit farming remains limited, with supply falling far below demand—less than one percent of the market is currently met by conventional breeds.
Liu Renliang's farm uses a self-breeding model, starting by capturing wild hares from the fields and then allowing them to reproduce naturally. He sells each rabbit for 100 yuan, achieving a profit that is more than five times that of regular rabbits. His products have already found their way to markets in Guangdong and Beijing, but demand continues to outpace supply.
According to Liu, while his operation is still in its early stages, the main goal is to rapidly expand the scale of breeding. In the near future, he plans to collaborate with the Jiaonan City Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau and the local government of the Jiaohe Economic Zone. Through an association model, he aims to involve nearby farmers in wild rabbit breeding, helping them build sustainable incomes and improve their livelihoods.
If all goes well, this cooperative approach could lead to the development of more than 2,000 hares this year, creating new opportunities for rural communities and boosting the local economy. This initiative not only highlights the potential of wild rabbit farming but also demonstrates how innovative agricultural practices can drive growth and prosperity in the region.
