Rabbit fattening skills

Rabbit fattening is the final stage in rabbit production, aimed at producing high-quality meat and pelts. This phase should begin once the skeletal growth of the rabbits is complete, as the primary weight gain during this period comes from muscle and fat development. To ensure optimal results, there are five key factors to consider in rabbit rearing and management. First, during the fattening stage, it's essential to feed rabbits a diet primarily composed of concentrates. High-sugar feeds such as sweet potatoes, potatoes, hawthorn, and radishes are particularly effective in promoting weight gain. However, it's also important to include green feed in their diet to maintain a balanced nutritional intake and support overall health. Second, limiting physical activity is crucial for efficient fattening. By reducing movement, rabbits will consume less energy, allowing more nutrients to be directed toward fat deposition. Keeping rabbits in a high-density environment with low light and warmth can further enhance fat accumulation, creating ideal conditions for weight gain. Third, castrating male rabbits before the fattening period can significantly improve meat quality and reduce feed costs. Castration lowers metabolic rate and oxidation processes, which helps the rabbits store more fat. Studies show that castrated males can gain 10% to 15% more weight than uncastrated ones under similar feeding conditions. Fourth, ensuring adequate water supply is vital during this time. As the diet shifts from mainly green feed to concentrates, rabbits need constant access to clean, fresh water. It’s recommended to provide water 2 to 3 times daily to maintain hydration and support digestion. Lastly, maintaining hygiene is critical due to the high density of rabbits and limited space, which can weaken their immune systems. Regular cleaning of the living area, proper waste management, and ensuring clean feed and water are all necessary to prevent disease outbreaks and keep the rabbits healthy throughout the fattening process.
