How to avoid inbreeding of fur animals

How can inbreeding depression be prevented in fur animal breeding? Based on years of practical experience, the most effective approach is to establish a detailed bloodline record for the entire population on the farm. Each animal should be assigned a standardized identification tag and placed on its cage. When planning matings, breeders must strictly follow scientific non-inbreeding guidelines. All mating plans are carefully designed to avoid close inbreeding, and all breeders must adhere to these plans during the breeding process. Before the offspring are separated into nests, a generation-specific genealogy file is created. When selling animals, the pedigree records and numbered tags must accompany them. By following this systematic approach across generations, farms can effectively prevent inbreeding and ensure that animals purchased from other sources also maintain genetic diversity. If animals are imported from another farm, it’s essential that the original farm has pedigree records and identification tags. The buyer should take these documents with the animals and use the original lineage information to plan future matings. If the farm does not have any recorded lineage, it’s recommended to purchase animals from two different farms to introduce new genetic material. Once the animals arrive, pedigree files should be immediately created, and each animal should be assigned a unique number. The numbering system is as follows: For 30 animals imported from Farm A and 30 from Farm B, including 10 males and 20 females from each: - Male names from Farm A: A01, A03, A05…A19 - Female names from Farm A: A02, A04, A06…A40 - Male names from Farm B: B01, B03, B05…B19 - Female names from Farm B: B02, B04, B06…B40 When designing mating plans, males from Farm A are paired with females from Farm B, and vice versa. This ensures genetic diversity and reduces the risk of inbreeding over time. This method not only improves the health and productivity of the herd but also helps maintain long-term sustainability in fur animal breeding operations.
