1. Construction of Pig Houses: Building a pig house for pigs in a fermentation bed system is crucial. It can be modified from an existing structure, but it should be designed to optimize the environment for microbial activity. Ideally, the pig house should face south, with the east-west orientation ensuring maximum sunlight and good airflow. The north and south sides should have openings for ventilation. Each pen should be around 20 square meters (minimum 10 square meters), allowing for about 15 pigs. The walls should be 3 meters high, and the roof should reach 4.5 meters. A window on the southern side that can be opened and closed freely helps regulate temperature and humidity, which is essential for the microbes to thrive and support the fermentation process. An automatic feeder is installed on the northern wall, while an automatic waterer is placed on the southern side to ensure efficient feeding and hydration.
2. Construction of the Fermentation Bed: There are two main types of fermentation beds: ground-level and underground. For underground systems, dig about 50 centimeters deep, then level the bedding so it matches the ground surface. For ground-level setups, build a low wall around the area to contain the bedding material. Using the land surface is cost-effective and allows better air circulation. However, if the original floor is cement, it may not be removed immediately, but over time—usually after a few months—the space might become too small, leading to water accumulation in the pens. In such cases, emergency measures like drilling holes for drainage, drying out overly wet litter, or adding dry sawdust can help. The pens should generally remain enclosed. On the northern side, care must be taken to prevent rainwater from entering the pens, and on the southern side, groundwater should not seep into the fermentation bed. If the foundation is too damp, appropriate waterproofing measures should be taken to maintain optimal conditions for the fermentation process.
