1. Building the Pig House: Constructing a pig house for fermentation bed systems is essential. It can be modified from an existing structure, but it should ideally face south or southeast to maximize sunlight and airflow. The layout should allow for good natural lighting and ventilation, with openings on both the north and south sides. Each pen should have a net area of about 20 square meters (though it shouldn't be less than 10 m²), accommodating around 15 pigs. The walls should be 3 meters high, and the roof should be 4.5 meters tall. A large, adjustable window facing south will help regulate temperature and humidity, which is crucial for microbial activity and efficient composting. An automatic feeder is typically installed on the northern side, while the southern side has an automatic waterer to ensure proper feeding and hydration.
2. Building the Fermentation Bed: There are two main types of fermentation beds—on-ground and underground. For underground systems, dig about 50 centimeters deep and level the bedding with the ground surface. For on-ground setups, build a low wall around the area to contain the bedding material. This method is cost-effective and allows for better air circulation. However, if the original floor is concrete, it may not be suitable for long-term use. In such cases, the floor can be temporarily left in place, but after a few months, the area might become too small, leading to water accumulation. To address this, you can drill holes for drainage, dry out the wet bedding, and add more dry sawdust to maintain balance. The pens should generally be enclosed to prevent rainwater from entering. On the north side, take care to avoid moisture buildup, and on the south side, ensure that groundwater does not seep into the fermentation bed. If the foundation becomes too damp, consider implementing waterproofing measures to maintain optimal conditions for the composting process.
