Rabbit fattening skills

Rabbit fattening is the final stage in rabbit production, aimed at producing high-quality meat and pelts. This phase should begin once the skeletal development of the rabbits is complete. Proper management during this period ensures optimal weight gain through muscle and fat deposition. Here are five essential points to consider for effective rabbit rearing and management: First, after the skeleton has fully developed, the main source of weight gain during fattening comes from muscle and fat. Therefore, a diet rich in concentrates is recommended. It's especially beneficial to include feeds high in sugars such as sweet potatoes, potatoes, hawthorn, and radishes. At the same time, green feed should be incorporated to ensure a balanced diet and provide necessary nutrients. Second, limiting the movement of rabbits during the fattening period can help reduce energy expenditure and increase fat accumulation. Rabbits can be kept in higher densities in a warm, dark environment, which encourages them to conserve energy and deposit more fat. Third, castrating male rabbits before the fattening period can significantly improve meat quality and reduce feed costs. Castration lowers the metabolic rate and oxidation levels in the body, promoting better fat deposition. Studies have shown that castrated males can gain 10% to 15% more weight than non-castrated ones under similar feeding conditions. Fourth, it's important to ensure adequate water supply during the fattening phase. As the diet transitions from mainly green feed to concentrate-based feed, rabbits need constant access to clean water. Provide fresh water two to three times daily to maintain hydration and support digestion. Finally, maintaining good hygiene is crucial due to the high-density housing, limited exercise, and reduced light exposure during this period. These factors can weaken the rabbits' immune systems, making them more susceptible to diseases. Regular cleaning of the living area, proper waste management, and ensuring clean feed and water are essential to prevent health issues. By following these five key strategies, rabbit farmers can maximize growth efficiency, improve meat quality, and ensure the overall well-being of their animals during the fattening phase.
