Hongyexiangxiang is a fast-growing deciduous tree belonging to the Citronaceae family. It is highly valued for its high-quality timber, which is widely used in shipbuilding, construction, and furniture manufacturing. In addition to its wood, the tender shoots of this plant can be processed into a delicious vegetable known as "leek-like" greens, considered a rare and nutritious woody vegetable. Rich in 17 essential amino acids, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and vitamins, it also contains unique aromatic compounds that have shown remarkable benefits for blood-related conditions. Due to its health benefits, it has been praised by foreigners as "China's Green Health Food."
Based on my extensive experience in cultivation, I would like to introduce two main methods: open-air greenhouse cultivation and three-dimensional indoor shelf cultivation. For open-air greenhouse cultivation, the ideal temperature range is 18-25°C. The best location is a well-drained area with partial shade and proper land formation. Planting density is about 4,000 seedlings per acre, with each plant spaced 1.5 kg apart. A double-row triangular planting pattern is recommended, with a width of 2 meters between rows and 30 cm between plants. A 160 cm wide path is left between rows for easy management and harvesting. With proper care, the plantation can yield for 5-6 years. The best time to start cultivation is before the last frost, ideally until mid-May. After the frost season ends, seedlings are moved into greenhouses, and the second mixed liquid irrigation and root-promoting method is applied. This results in 3-5 harvests during the Spring Festival period, with each vegetable producing around 0.3 kg. This system offers significant economic returns.
For three-dimensional indoor shelf cultivation, the requirements for temperature and humidity are relatively low compared to most vegetables. This method is suitable for greenhouses, industrial buildings, homes, or even balcony spaces. The ideal growth temperature ranges from 16-25°C. Temperature control should be prioritized during the early stages. Using shelf systems, the spacing between layers should be 35 cm. The seedling trays can be covered with black plastic film to help retain heat and moisture. High-quality red peony seeds should be selected, their wings removed, and impurities eliminated. Soak them in warm water at approximately 50°C for 15-20 minutes to disinfect, then soak them at room temperature for 12 hours. Place them in a greenhouse maintained at 20-24°C, turning the seeds 2-3 times daily. After three days, about 60% of the seeds will show white sprouts.
Once the seeds are ready, clean the nursery trays and place a layer of newspaper or white cotton cloth at the bottom. Spread a 25 cm thick layer of wet perlite on top. Evenly distribute the sprouted seeds on the substrate and cover them with another 1.5 cm layer of perlite. Spray water until the perlite is half-moist. After 2-3 days, when the seedlings reach about 2 cm in height, apply a high-efficiency growth agent. Within 8-10 days, the seedlings can be harvested when the hypocotyls reach 8-12 cm in length, allowing for early market availability. This method ensures consistent and efficient production.
