After the temperature drops and rainwater decreases, it's recommended to use cooled well water to prevent root rot. By the end of August, as temperatures begin to fall, leeks enter a period of rapid growth. At this stage, proper watering and fertilization are essential. A bio-organic fertilizer can be applied every 10–15 days at a rate of 50 kg per 667 square meters (1 mu), or chicken manure, bean cake, or other organic materials can be used three times in succession. Chemical fertilizers should be minimized, and by early October, fertilization and watering should stop to avoid leggy growth. Summer and autumn leek management includes several key steps. First, reapplying base fertilizer is important. Leeks have a "topping root" habit, so after they are cut in spring, if they haven't grown tall yet, the soil should be loosened and mixed with composted fine soil. About 15,000 kg of composted fertilizer per 667 square meters is recommended. Using bio-organic fertilizer is ideal because it improves soil quality, reduces pollution, and is less attractive to pests. Apply 100 kg per 667 square meters evenly, cover with 1 cm of fine soil, and avoid watering to prevent compaction. The subsequent care is similar to that of young leeks. Pest and disease control is also crucial. Aphids are a major threat, especially during three peak periods: early May, late July, and late October. To manage them, decomposed organic fertilizer is preferred, and chemical insecticides like 48% Difenoxin or 48% Loestnut EC can be used. These products effectively control pests such as cockroaches and wireworms. Apply 300–400 ml per 667 square meters with 500 liters of water, using a sprayer or irrigation along the rows. For Le Si, use 400–667 ml per 500 liters of water. Biological methods, such as applying plant ash (100–200 kg per 667 square meters), help reduce pest activity and improve soil potassium levels. During the summer, leeks are prone to diseases, so spraying a mixture of 50% sulfur (diluted 1000 times) and 50% carbendazim (diluted 500 times) every 10–15 days is recommended for prevention and treatment. To prevent lodging, especially in hot and rainy summers, a scaffolding system is used. Stakes of 30 cm are placed at both ends of the leek rows, connected by wires. Additional supports are added every 5 meters. Fine bamboo is laid across the wires, allowing leaves to grow upright without falling over. Harvesting leek stalks (jiu tai) promptly is essential once they appear. This helps conserve nutrients, promotes rhizome development, and increases winter yield. Finally, covering the leeks properly during dormancy is important. Before the dormant period, remove branches and leaves, clean the area, and place rammed soil near the roots between the rows. Expose the bulbs to sunlight and cold for 4–5 days, then apply 10 kg urea, 30 kg diammonium phosphate, 30 kg potassium sulfate, and organic materials like bean cake or sesame. Cover with a 0.5–1 cm layer of dry soil, water thoroughly, and apply 500 ml of Shi Di Ling insecticide per 667 square meters. Finally, cover the plants with soil and insulate using straw or wheat chaff.
