Hongyexiangxiang is a fast-growing deciduous tree belonging to the Citronaceae family. It is highly valued for its high-quality timber, which is widely used in shipbuilding, construction, and furniture manufacturing. In addition, its tender shoots can be processed into a unique and delicious vegetable known as "leeks," considered a rare and nutritious woody vegetable. Rich in 17 essential amino acids, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and various vitamins, it also contains a special aromatic compound that contributes to its health benefits. This plant has been praised by foreigners as "China's Green Health Food" due to its positive effects on blood-related diseases.
Based on my extensive experience in cultivation, I would like to share two open-field methods and three indoor shelf-based cultivation techniques. For open-air greenhouse cultivation, the ideal temperature range is between 18-25°C. The best location is well-drained land with partial shade. Planting density is around 4,000 seedlings per acre, with each plant spaced 1.5 kg apart. A double-row triangular planting pattern is recommended, with 2 meters between rows and 30 cm between plants. A 160 cm wide alley is left between rows to serve as a management path for harvesting vegetables. With proper management, this system can provide continuous harvests for 5-6 years. The optimal time for planting is from the end of the frost season up to early May. After the last frost, seedlings are moved into greenhouses, where the second mixed solution irrigation and root-promoting method is applied. This results in 3-5 harvests during the Spring Festival period, with each vegetable producing about 0.3 kg. The economic returns are quite significant.
For three-dimensional indoor shelf cultivation, the requirements for light intensity are much lower than those of traditional vegetables. The environment should maintain a suitable temperature and humidity. Suitable locations include heated greenhouses, industrial buildings, homes, or even balconies. The ideal growth temperature is between 16-25°C, so maintaining this temperature is crucial. Shelf cultivation is commonly used, with a spacing of 35 cm between layers. Seedling trays can be covered with black film to help retain moisture and warmth. High-quality red peony seeds are selected, their wings are removed, and impurities are cleaned out. Seeds are then soaked in warm water (around 50°C) for 15-20 minutes to eliminate bacteria, followed by a 12-hour soak at room temperature. They are placed in a greenhouse set at 20-24°C, and turned 2-3 times daily. After three days, about 60% of the seeds will have germinated and turned white.
The nursery tray is washed thoroughly, and a layer of newspaper or white cotton cloth is placed at the bottom. A 25 cm thick layer of wet perlite is added on top. The germinated seeds are evenly spread over the substrate and covered with another 1.5 cm layer of perlite. Water is sprayed until the perlite is half-moist. After 2-3 days, when the seedlings reach about 2 cm in height, a high-efficiency growth agent is applied. Within 8-10 days, the seedlings can be harvested when the hypocotyls are 8-12 cm long, allowing for early market availability. This method ensures consistent yield and quality, making it an excellent choice for commercial growers.
