Esophageal stents bring new hope to patients with esophageal cancer

Professor Teng Junjun from the Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University has confirmed that esophageal stents can prolong and significantly improve symptoms of dysphagia and can be prolonged in the treatment of unresectable esophageal cancer obstruction compared with self-expanding metal stents. The patient's survival time did not increase the incidence of complications.
In recent years, esophageal metal stent placement has become the standard treatment for esophageal cancer obstruction, but traditional esophageal stent treatment can not control the further growth of the tumor, postoperative stents are prone to restenosis, affecting long-term efficacy.
Professor Teng Junjun's research group developed an internal irradiation esophageal stent loaded with radioactive iodine (125I) particles in 2005. The previous animal experiments and clinical Phase I trials have proved their safety; single-center, randomized controlled phase II trials have also proved that they are more traditional. Metal self-expanding stent grafts are more effective. On this basis, the prospective, multi-center, randomized controlled phase III clinical trials conducted by Professor Teng Junjun's research group in 16 hospitals confirmed the above results.
