Half a bag of sugar for a bottle of drink? 1 bottle of sugar Sydney, can make 7 lollipops

A New Zealand photographer living in New York, Henry Hagrif made ingenuity to make various kinds of drinks into lollipops, and took photos, videos and uploaded them to the internet to directly show people the high sugar content in drinks. . In his experiment, there was as much as 39 grams of sugar in Coca-Cola.

A bottle of Coca-Cola really contains such polysaccharides? So what about other drinks? Will there be more sugar? In this issue of “News Lab”, the reporter randomly purchased 6 bottles (listening) of different brands of beverages from small supermarkets and came to the Department of Materials Engineering of Zhejiang Industry and Trade Vocational and Technical College. The lecturer, Gao Wei, was asked to reveal the secrets for us.

Among them, a bottle of Master Kong Sugar Pear (500ml bottle) has the highest sugar content of 56.1g and can be used as 7 lollipops. After reading the experimental results, we are not calm.

Experimental preparation

Laboratory Venue: Laboratory of Material Engineering, Zhejiang University of Industry and Commerce

Experimental Beverages: Cola (330ml), Sprite (330ml), Kangshifu Classic Milk Tea (310ml), Kangshifu Sugar Pear (500ml), Pulse (600ml), Queer (450ml)

Experimental apparatus: beaker, electric furnace, glass stir bar, lollipop making mold, etc.

experiment procedure

The first step: Pour the six beverages into a beaker and place them in an electric oven for heating to evaporate the water.

Takahashi's analysis: In each of the six types of beverages, the ingredient list contains ingredients for white sugar. By heating, water in the beverage can evaporate, but sugars and other substances cannot evaporate.

The second step: Continuously heating, the beverages in the six beakers continue to decrease, eventually being made into a syrup.

Gao Ke teacher's analysis: In the tanning process, once the liquid volume is no longer reduced, it is proved that the water has basically been evaporated, then you can turn off the heat and carry out subsequent weighing and comparison experiments.

The third step is to pour syrup into six kinds of drinks and pour them into lollipops to make molds, wait for cooling and compare them.

Takahashi analysis: The process of transferring syrup from one container to another will inevitably have a certain amount of residue, but this comparison experiment only uses the syrup made into the lollipop to calculate the weight.

Experimental results

By making lollipops, and subsequent weighing, we finally came up with this set of data:

"Because the tanning process is a manual operation, and there are losses during the production of the stick, and despite the lollipop mould, there is still an error in each lollipop produced, so there will be some error, but despite This can still reflect the fact that beverages are generally high in sugar content.” According to teacher Takahashi, the syrup that is brewed in syrup has more sugar as its main ingredient, but it also contains other additives that are necessary to make beverages. Therefore, this experimental method can show that the beverage contains more sugar, and it cannot absolutely say that containing so many sugars can be used as a reference for everyone.

Doctors reminded to drink less boiled water for healthy growth

Sugary drinks are the main source of added sugar. It is understood that in the newly published "Chinese Residents Meal Guide 2016", it is suggested that sugar be added. "Each person's daily intake should not exceed 50g, preferably below 25g."

In this regard, Zhang Yu, director of the Department of Paediatrics and director of the City Children's Growth and Development Center of the City Hospital for Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine (City Children's Hospital) said that there are currently two types of beverages on the market, one is a functional beverage and the other is an ordinary beverage. Functional beverages, which are usually accompanied by hormones or hormones, are not suitable for children to drink; ordinary beverages, their sugar content is generally higher, more sweet, children are more love to drink, excessive drinking can lead to obesity or Tooth decay, and there will be metabolic syndrome, precocious puberty and other conditions, and which carbonated beverages will be combined with calcium in food, affecting the absorption of calcium. As for diabetes, hypertension, etc., these diseases are indirectly or directly related to long-term sugar intake.

Director Zhang Yu reminded that for children and adolescents, to ensure their physical health, it is advisable to drink less sugary drinks and advocate drinking boiled water instead of sugary drinks. At the same time, it also reminds young people that they must control their mouths and take steps. (Wenzhou Evening News)
