In recent weeks, several readers from different regions reached out to our hotline 110, including Mr. Luo from Bo'ai County, Mr. Tian from Tanghe County, and Mr. Fan from Dengfeng City, all seeking advice on how to prevent tomato virus disease. In response, we consulted with experts from our newspaper's advisory panel. They explained that tomato virus disease is a widespread issue, with several common types such as mosaic, fern leaf, streak, clump, leaf curl, and yellow top. Among these, the autumn season tends to see the most severe outbreaks.
The symptoms vary depending on the type of virus:
- **Mosaic Type**: This occurs mainly on the upper leaves, showing a mix of yellow and green patterns, or dark and light mottling. Leaves may appear chlorotic, with curled tips and stunted growth. New leaves are small, with bright veins and pale coloration.
- **Fern Leaf Type**: The plant becomes dwarfed, and the mesophyll in the upper leaves deteriorates. Leaves become narrow and linear, with shortened internodes. Middle and lower leaves may curl slightly, and petals may become elongated and thickened.
- **Stripe Type**: This can affect stems, leaves, and fruits. On the stem, it starts as dark green streaks that turn brown and spread, leading to wilting. Infected leaves show brown patterns or spots, while fruits develop sunken, light brown lesions and become deformed.
- **Clump Type**: The top of the plant develops multiple branches and leafhoppers, causing leaves to become linear, pale, and deformed. The plant may fail to produce fruit, or the fruit may be hard and conical.
- **Leaf Curl Type**: Leaves curl upward, with yellowed veins and spherical lobes, leading to overall stunting of the plant.
- **Yellow Top Type**: The top leaves turn pale green or yellow, becoming small and shriveled. The middle part of the leaf is slightly raised, edges curl, and the plant becomes short with increased branching.
To manage and prevent tomato virus disease, several effective measures can be taken:
- **Choose Resistant Varieties**: Planting virus-resistant hybrids is one of the most effective strategies.
- **Seed Treatment**: Use seeds from healthy plants and consider commercial seeds. Soak seeds in clean water for 3–4 hours before planting, then treat them with a 10% trisodium phosphate solution for 30 minutes. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
- **Field Management**: Ensure timely sowing, cultivate strong seedlings, avoid transplanting weak ones, and maintain proper spacing. Proper watering and fertilization, especially with phosphorus and potassium, help improve plant health and resistance.
- **Prevent Transmission**: Farmers should wash hands and tools after handling infected plants. Smokers should also wash their hands before working in the field to avoid spreading the virus.
- **Use Reflective Mulch**: Silver-gray mulch can deter pests and reduce virus transmission effectively.
- **Chemical Control**: Apply 20% virus A wettable powder at a rate of 700–1000 times dilution (100–150 grams per acre) before or at the early stages of infection. Spray every 7–10 days for 2–3 applications to reduce infection and boost plant immunity.
By implementing these practices, farmers can significantly reduce the risk of tomato virus disease and protect their crops.
