Self-made substrate nutrition soil

Self-produced substrate nutrition soil made from sawdust can be turned into high-quality nutrient soil through a simple and effective fermentation process. Here's how to do it step by step:

Preparation: Start with 2 cubic meters of sawdust, 1 bag of microbial fermentation agent, 2 kg of urea (or 50-100 kg of poultry manure), and 5 kg of rice bran. These ingredients will help speed up the decomposition and enrich the final product.

Moisture Adjustment: Before mixing, check the moisture level of the sawdust. The ideal moisture content should be between 60-65%. A simple way to test is to squeeze a handful of sawdust — if it holds together without dripping water, it’s just right. If it's too wet or too dry, the fermentation process may slow down or fail. Mix 2 kg of urea with enough water to create a urea solution for later use.

Microbial Inoculant Preparation: To make spreading easier, mix the microbial agent evenly with 5 kg of rice bran. This creates a more manageable mixture that can be spread uniformly across the sawdust pile. The resulting blend weighs about 6 kg and ensures even distribution of microbes.

Layering and Piling: Combine the inoculated rice bran mixture with the sawdust, then sprinkle the urea solution over the pile. Make sure to mix everything thoroughly. Once done, form a heap and cover it with a breathable material, such as a tarp or straw, to maintain optimal conditions for fermentation.

Turning the Pile: After 7–10 days, the temperature inside the pile should reach around 60°C. At this point, turn the pile to ensure even fermentation. Keep it at high temperature for 24–36 hours, then wait until the temperature rises again. Repeat the turning process once more. After the second turn, let the pile rest for 5–7 days. When the temperature stabilizes below 40°C, the compost is ready.

The entire process usually takes 25–30 days under normal conditions. If you prefer a more mature product, you can extend the time to 30–45 days.
