Vanda

Scientific Name: Vanda (originally known as "Sanskrit" in India, referring to orchids that grow on trees)

Introduction:

Vanda Orchid is a resilient member of the orchid family. Our experts have translated its name as "daily," likely because of its strong vitality and ability to thrive across generations. Many who have grown Vanda Orchids are deeply inspired by its determination and courage to face challenges head-on.

Growth Habits:

Vanda Orchids are native to regions like Malaysia, Florida, and the Hawaiian Islands. To date, over 70 native species have been identified, with more than 1,000 hybrids developed through human cultivation. This makes it one of the most important groups of epiphytic orchids. In China, two native species have been found on Hainan Island: one is the pure-color Vanda, and the other is the dense-leaf Vanda, both growing attached to trees in ancient forests.

Morphological Features:

Vanda Orchids grow upright without pseudobulbs. Their leaves are arranged alternately along a single stem, resembling the ribs of the human chest. Some long-stemmed varieties can branch or climb. The leaves are ribbon-like, firm, and have a concave midrib that looks like a ditch. They form a distinct "V" shape, making them highly resistant to drought and strong sunlight without easily wilting. Their aerial roots are thick and long, some resembling chopsticks. These roots emerge from the base of the leaves, and a healthy plant often has numerous white roots hanging down like Santa’s beard. The more white roots present, the more vibrant the flowering will be.

In countries like Thailand and Singapore, each Vanda pod typically produces one leaf, and each cultivar can bloom with 15 to 20 flowers. In Japan, however, Vanda Orchids usually produce only 3 to 4 flowers, which may be influenced by local weather conditions.

Flowering Season:

The blooming period of Vanda Orchids is truly eye-catching. The petals are round, elongated, and triangular in shape. The lip is fused with the column, with the lateral and central segments standing boldly. The overall flower structure is striking, with an unrestrained posture and rich colors. In addition to solid hues, many varieties feature spots, patterns, or two-tone coloration.

Usage:

Vanda Orchids bloom throughout the year, with flowers opening from the bottom up. This allows for a continuous display lasting 30 to 40 days. Due to their beauty and longevity, they are an excellent choice for floral arrangements in art and design.
