Vanda

Scientific Name: Vanda (originally known as "Sanskrit" in India, referring to orchids that grow on trees)

Introduction:

Vanda Orchid is a resilient member of the orchid family. Our team translated its name as "daily," likely due to its strong vitality and ability to thrive across generations. Many growers who have cultivated Vanda Orchids are deeply impressed by its perseverance and fearless spirit.

Growth Habits:

Vanda Orchids originate from regions such as Malaysia, Florida, and the Hawaiian Islands. To date, 70 native species have been identified, with over 1,000 hybrids developed through human selection. This makes it one of the most significant groups of epiphytic orchids. Two native species have been found on Hainan Island in China: one is a pure-color Vanda, and the other is a dense-leaf Vanda, both growing on trees in ancient forests.

Morphological Characteristics:

Vanda plants grow upright without pseudobulbs. The leaves are arranged alternately along the stem, resembling the ribs of the human chest. Some long-stemmed varieties can branch or climb. The leaves are ribbon-like, thick, and firm, with a concave midrib that looks like a ditch. They form a distinct "V" shape, making them highly resistant to drought and strong sunlight, yet they rarely wither. Their aerial roots are thick and long—some even resemble chopsticks. These roots grow directly from the leaves and hang down like Santa’s beard. The more white roots a plant has, the better it flowers.

In countries like Thailand and Singapore, one flower pod can produce almost one bloom per leaf, with each cultivar capable of producing 15 to 20 flowers. In Japan, however, Vanda Orchids typically only open 3 to 4 blooms, possibly due to differences in climate and growing conditions.

Flowering Season:

The flowering period of Vanda Orchids is truly impressive. The petals are round, elongated, and triangular in shape. The lip is fused with the column, and the lateral and central segments stand proudly. The overall flower shape is bold, with an unrestrained posture and vibrant colors. In addition to solid-colored varieties, there are also multi-toned options with spots or textures, offering a wide range of visual appeal.

Usage:

Vanda Orchids bloom throughout the year, with flowers opening from the bottom up. This allows for a continuous display lasting 30 to 40 days, making it an ideal choice for floral arrangements in art and design.
