First, the importance of proper mating.
Good flocking behavior is essential, but without careful matching and a well-organized distribution, the offspring may not perform well. In a purebred chicken population, one out of every 8 to 10 hens might pair with a particularly strong and high-quality rooster that possesses unique traits such as high fertility, good hatchability, strong disease resistance, or an attractive appearance. By selecting hens that also exhibit similar positive characteristics for mating, the overall quality and performance of the offspring can be significantly improved.
Second, purification and selection.
There are many excellent chicken breeds, and those that are well-adapted to local environments, have good production performance, and offer high economic value tend to thrive in their regions. Experience has shown that promoting a single variety in a specific area leads to faster development, better results, and less mixing of different types. Additionally, any chickens showing undesirable traits—such as messy feathers, early molting, late egg-laying, or small eggs—should be removed immediately to maintain breed quality.
Third, establishing a hatching and brooding center.
In areas where improved breeder chickens are being promoted, it’s important to set up hatching and brooding points on key farms. Eggs from the improved breeds are hatched at these centers and raised for about 10 days before being sold to farmers for further rearing. Alongside this, farmers should also be trained in scientific breeding practices, proper management techniques, and disease prevention methods to ensure long-term success.
Fourth, strict selection of breeding stock.
Once a sufficient number of imported breeder chickens are available, the local inferior breeding stock should be gradually phased out, starting with fewer numbers and moving toward complete replacement. This process should be done carefully, beginning with roosters and then hens, ensuring that only the best individuals remain. Throughout the improvement process, attention must be given to the selection and breeding of roosters, as they play a crucial role in determining the quality of future generations. It's also important to identify and promote the correct improved varieties. Over time, a stable breeding system should be established to ensure that high-quality, productive chickens continue to thrive for years to come.
