A higher concentration of sulfuric acid increases the specific gravity of the electrolyte, which lowers its freezing point. During winter, it’s crucial to maintain the battery’s charge level. If the battery discharges more than 50%, the electrolyte becomes at risk of freezing. Therefore, make sure not to discharge the battery beyond 50% before storage. Regularly check the battery’s charge status and recharge it as needed to prevent any issues.
The temperature of the electrolyte also plays a significant role in battery performance. For every 1°C drop in ambient temperature, the battery’s capacity can decrease by about 1% to 2%. To counteract this, store the vehicle indoors or move the battery to a room above 0°C. Keeping the battery warm helps maintain its efficiency and prolongs its life.
When adding distilled water to the battery, it's important to mix it evenly with the existing electrolyte. If the water isn't mixed well, it may float on top and freeze. To avoid this, add distilled water only when charging the battery or immediately after, so that the mixture becomes uniform quickly and doesn’t freeze.
Finally, regular maintenance is essential. Periodically start the engine and check the battery’s performance. Adjust the voltage regulator to increase the charging voltage to around 0.60V. Avoid starting the engine for more than 3–5 seconds at a time, and wait at least one minute between starts. Continuous starting can damage both the starter motor and the battery, so it’s best to limit the number of attempts.
