In a significant breakthrough, Chinese scientists have identified the human bocavirus (HBoV) and named its gene sequence "WLL-1." This discovery marks an important step in understanding respiratory infections in children. The research was led by Dr. Lin Feng, dean of the First People's Hospital of Wenling City in Zhejiang Province, and involved a collaborative effort with several institutions, including the Hangzhou Zhiyuan Medical Laboratory, the Chinese Academy of Military Medical Sciences, and the University of Missouri Columbia.
The study began at the end of 1999, initially focused on the new coronavirus. Although no coronavirus was found during the investigation, the team successfully detected seven HBoV gene sequences from 240 hospitalized children suffering from acute lower respiratory tract infections. Using cloning and sequencing techniques, they fully mapped the viral genome. On July 26 of this year, the sequence was officially added to the American Gene Bank and named HBoV-WLL-1. This made the research group the fifth global team to identify human bocavirus infection.
In addition to the discovery, the team developed a rapid fluorescence quantitative PCR detection method, allowing for the identification of HBoV in children within just one hour. This advancement is crucial, as there are numerous causes of lower respiratory tract infections in young patients. The development of this diagnostic technique offers a scientific foundation for faster diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of the underlying causes of these infections. It also highlights the prevalence of HBoV in China and emphasizes the need for further vaccine development.
Moreover, the researchers successfully isolated the antigenic protein of HBoV, laying the groundwork for detecting specific antibodies in infected children. This progress could lead to better diagnostic tools and improved public health strategies in the fight against this emerging virus.
