Female pregnancy diagnosis method

After 5 to 7 days post-mating, the female rabbit is returned to her original cage for a process known as "compounding." A pregnant female will typically avoid the male rabbit, refuse to mount him, and may emit soft vocalizations or "buzzing" sounds. In contrast, if the female allows mating, it suggests she is not pregnant. To confirm pregnancy, a weighing method is often used. Female rabbits are weighed 15 days before mating and then weighed again after that period. A significant weight gain usually indicates pregnancy, while little change may suggest infertility. However, this method is not highly accurate on its own and should be combined with other techniques. Another commonly used technique is the "touching the fetus" method, performed around 10 days after mating. The female is placed on a flat surface, and the handler gently grasps her ears and neck with one hand, positioning her head toward the abdomen. With the other hand, the thumb and fingers are shaped like an "eight," and the abdomen is gently palpated from front to back along the abdominal wall. If the area feels soft and spongy, it likely means no pregnancy. However, if small, round, movable, and elastic lumps are felt—resembling peanuts—it is a sign of pregnancy. It's important to distinguish these from fecal pellets, which are hard, non-elastic, and rough in texture. This method is simple, effective, and widely used by breeders. However, care must be taken to handle the rabbit gently. Avoid lifting the rabbit off the ground during the examination, and never pinch or count the embryos with your fingers. Additionally, it’s best to minimize handling after day 15, as excessive touching can potentially cause a miscarriage. Always be patient and calm when performing this check to ensure the comfort and safety of the rabbit.
