Seed-bearing Formula Fertilization in Mountainous Areas in Yuanan County, Hubei Province

In recent years, tobacco farmers in some mountainous townships of Yuan County in Hubei Province have begun to adopt soil testing and formula fertilization under the guidance of agricultural technicians. This approach has helped improve soil structure and boost the quality and yield of tobacco leaves, leading to positive results. However, when it comes to food crop production, many farmers still rely heavily on chemical fertilizers while using minimal organic manure. Most farmers have not given much thought to maintaining soil fertility, often applying fertilizers randomly without proper understanding. As a result, the already poor soil quality in these mountainous areas has been further degraded, negatively impacting crop growth and productivity. The main reasons behind this situation are twofold: first, many farmers in mountainous regions lack knowledge about soil testing and formula fertilization; second, there is a shortage of effective technical support and guidance from agricultural experts in this area. In recent years, the central government and local authorities have increasingly focused on rural development, agriculture, and farmers' livelihoods. Grain production has become a key priority in these efforts. Soil testing and formula fertilization play a crucial role in improving grain quality, increasing yields, and reducing farming costs, which can significantly raise farmers’ incomes. Therefore, the author urges mountainous county and township governments to learn from successful examples and promote the widespread adoption of soil testing and formula fertilization practices. To implement this effectively, several measures are recommended. First, clear responsibilities should be assigned. Soil testing and formula fertilization should be included in the services provided by the local agricultural technology service center, with the government purchasing these services to ensure proper funding and execution. The township government should sign service contracts with the center. Second, public awareness needs to be increased through various channels, such as educational campaigns and demonstrations, to help farmers understand the benefits of scientific fertilization and create a supportive environment for change. Third, training programs should be strengthened, focusing on building a team of skilled local agricultural technicians. Through hands-on training, field guidance, and continuous support, farmers can be better equipped to carry out soil testing and formula fertilization, ultimately enhancing agricultural efficiency and improving their income.
