Seed-bearing Formula Fertilization in Mountainous Areas in Yuanan County, Hubei Province

In recent years, tobacco farmers in several mountainous townships of Yuan County, Hubei Province, have started to adopt soil testing and formula fertilization under the guidance of agricultural technicians. This initiative has significantly improved soil structure and boosted tobacco yields, leading to positive outcomes. However, when it comes to food crop production, many farmers still rely heavily on chemical fertilizers while using minimal organic manure. Most farmers do not take land fertility into serious consideration when planting crops, often applying fertilizers randomly. The natural fertility of mountainous farmlands is already low, and improper fertilization practices further hinder crop growth. The main reasons behind this issue are twofold: first, farmers in mountainous areas lack knowledge about soil testing and formula fertilization; second, there is a shortage of effective technical support from agricultural experts. Despite the growing attention from the central government and local authorities on rural development, grain production remains a key concern. Soil testing and formula fertilization play a crucial role in enhancing grain quality, increasing yield, and reducing farming costs, ultimately benefiting farmers' income. Therefore, the author urges mountainous county and township governments to follow the successful examples of soil testing and fertilization practices seen in other rural areas. To implement this effectively, the following measures are recommended. First, clear responsibilities should be assigned. Soil testing and formula fertilization should be included in the procurement scope of the local agricultural service center, ensuring professional support for farmers. The township government should sign a service agreement with the center. Second, public awareness needs to be strengthened through various channels to spread the benefits of soil testing and formula fertilization, creating a supportive environment among farmers. Third, training must be intensified. Agricultural technicians should be trained through workshops, printed materials, and hands-on sessions to build a group of knowledgeable and skilled farmer technicians. With ongoing technical support and field guidance, farmers can better manage soil health, leading to higher productivity and increased income.
