I replaced the traditional wicker ring with a plastic film bag to seal and protect my Cymbidium. After trimming the roots, I covered the leaves and the flower bud (calyx) with the plastic bag to minimize water loss while keeping the plant from getting wet. I placed it in a shaded room with a moderate temperature, misting the roots lightly to keep them slightly moist. Once the calyx had grown to about 20 cm, I transplanted it into a pot. After potting, I continued to cover the leaves and flower buds with the plastic bag and kept it in a shaded indoor area. Over the next few days, I gradually removed the bag—first by cutting the top for ventilation, then slowly opening the sides until it was fully removed. This method helped the plant adapt smoothly and bloom more quickly.
To maintain a healthy Cymbidium, it's important to manage two key humidity levels: high air humidity and low soil moisture. Native to mountainous regions, Cymbidium thrives in environments with around 80% relative humidity. Most home settings can't match that level, which is one of the main challenges in growing this orchid successfully. To boost air humidity, I place the plant in a cool, shaded area to reduce evaporation, and I frequently mist the surrounding area to create a more humid microclimate. However, the soil should never be overly wet. Excess moisture can lead to root rot and poor growth. It’s essential to strike a balance—water only when necessary and ensure good drainage. This is especially important in rainy southern regions where overwatering is a common mistake. By carefully managing both humidity and watering, I’ve been able to grow strong, healthy Cymbidium plants.
