I replaced the traditional wicker ring with a plastic film bag to seal and protect my Cymbidium orchid. After trimming the roots, I covered the leaves and flower buds with the plastic bag to minimize water loss while keeping them dry. I placed the plant in a shaded area where the temperature remains moderate, and lightly misted the roots to keep them slightly moist. Once the flower spike grew to around 20 cm, I transplanted it into a pot. After potting, I continued to cover the leaves and buds with the plastic bag and kept it in a shaded indoor space. Over the next few days, I gradually removed the plastic by first cutting the top for ventilation, then slowly opening the sides until the bag was completely removed. This process helped the orchid adjust smoothly and bloom more quickly.
To maintain a healthy Cymbidium, it's essential to manage two key factors: high air humidity and low soil moisture. Native to mountainous regions, Cymbidiums thrive in environments with around 80% relative humidity. While most households can't replicate such conditions exactly, there are ways to mimic it. One effective method is to place the orchid in a cool, shaded spot away from direct sunlight, which helps reduce water evaporation. Another is to regularly mist the surrounding area or use a humidity tray filled with water and pebbles to increase the moisture in the air.
However, it's equally important to avoid overwatering. The soil should remain slightly moist but never soggy. Excess moisture can lead to root rot, as the roots need oxygen to breathe. In areas with high rainfall, extra caution is needed—overwatering can be just as harmful as under-watering. Balancing these conditions is crucial for successful Cymbidium care, and this delicate balance is often why many people find growing them challenging. With patience and proper attention, though, you can enjoy beautiful blooms year after year.
