Paeonia lactiflora, commonly known as the peony, is a traditional flower native to China and has been cherished for centuries. With its rich colors, elegant forms, and diverse varieties, it is one of the most beloved flowers in Chinese culture. The peony is often referred to as the "King of Flowers" and is celebrated for its beauty, fragrance, and symbolic significance. Many poets throughout history have been inspired by its charm, leaving behind countless famous poems that praise its grace. This perennial herb thrives in regions such as North China, Northeast China, and East China. It is hardy, adaptable, and resistant to cold and drought, making it well-suited for cultivation in areas like Beijing. Peonies typically bloom between May and June, making them a stunning addition to spring gardens. Beyond its ornamental value, the peony also holds great importance in traditional Chinese medicine. The propagation of peonies is relatively straightforward. They can be grown from seeds or through vegetative reproduction, with the latter being more commonly used. The best time for planting cuttings is between August and September. It is important to avoid using spring cuttings, as they may not develop properly. There's an old saying: “At the Spring Equinox, herbs are planted, but they do not bloom in the old days.” This reflects the traditional timing of planting and harvesting. After 3 to 4 years of growth, the roots are harvested before the start of autumn. The roots are carefully cleaned, washed, and then boiled until they become soft. Once cooked, the outer skin is scraped off using bamboo tools and dried for medicinal use. The peony root, known as "Bai Shao" in traditional Chinese medicine, is valued for its ability to nourish the blood, relieve pain, and regulate the liver. Its dual role as both a beautiful flower and a valuable herb makes the peony a truly remarkable plant.
