Winter Huang's clever method points

1. Water overwintering method. Astragalus, also known as yellow trout, is a cold-blooded fish that thrives in variable temperatures and has strong environmental adaptability. When the water temperature drops below 10°C (its optimal growth range is 15–30°C), it becomes less active and begins to hibernate. During this period, aquaculture ponds should be used for safe wintering. The water level should be raised to 30–50 cm to ensure the bottom of the pond remains above 0°C. If the pond freezes, ice should be broken daily to prevent oxygen depletion and maintain water quality.

2. Dry pool wintering method. When the water temperature falls below 10°C, drain the pond to leave the bottom slightly moist. Cover the mud surface with a layer of rice straw, wheat straw, or corn stalks, about 30 cm thick. This insulation helps maintain a stable temperature and protects the fish from extreme cold, reducing stress and improving survival rates during the winter months.

3. Indoor wintering method. When the temperature drops below 10°C, move the yellow trout into an indoor environment. Prepare a pool or bucket with a mixture of 1 kg of astragalus and 2 liters of water to create a suitable habitat. Place the fish in this setup and change the water daily to keep it clean and well-oxygenated. Maintain the room temperature between 2–5°C to mimic natural conditions and support the fish’s metabolism without causing unnecessary stress.

4. Plastic greenhouse wintering method. When winter temperatures drop below 12°C, using a plastic greenhouse can be an effective way to protect the fish. The water level inside the greenhouse should be slightly higher than the outdoor pond to provide better thermal insulation. Ensure the temperature inside the greenhouse stays between 2–8°C. At midday, when the temperature rises, open the ventilation holes to allow fresh air in and prevent oxygen deficiency. Install vents at the top of the greenhouse to maintain proper airflow and ensure the fish have enough oxygen throughout the winter season.

These methods are commonly used by farmers to successfully overwinter yellow trout, ensuring their survival and health through the colder months. Choosing the right technique depends on local climate, available resources, and the size of the operation. Proper monitoring and maintenance are essential to maximize success and minimize losses.
